Make sure you try it before relying on it. Takes effort and practice. March 11, 2010 J. Parkes (Fl USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lets start off with saying the ingredients are there, using magnesium and flint is a great way to get a hot start, but shaving the magnesium bar takes more effort than its worth. I ended up grinding my bar with a file until it was gone and saved the filings into a cigar tube, this took nearly four hours!
If you were hypothermic this would make fire starting very difficult. I try to plan for several scenarios while building a fire kit, I want at least three methods for fire and an emergency quick fire, this won't work for that. Try to plan for wind, weather, and outside temperature. It's the hypothermia that scares me, as strength and dexterity are severely compromised in this situation.
Get a couple of water proof tins and build firekits so you can save yourself! It's cheap and simple, use your head! Plan ahead! Practice!
Great survival item at a great price! As seen on Survivor! March 10, 2010 Wulfstan (San Jose, CA United States) These really work, and this is the best price I have seen. Get several, so you can keep one in your pocket when hiking, your daypack, your purse and your briefcase even.
Order an extra so you can try it out. Some practice is an excellent idea, and at this price, you can afford to get an extra one just to practice with.
Carry one with you, and hopefully we'll never have to see your name and the phrase "...his body was later found" together!

Get it. Works great. Replaced the dog-tag chain with paracord and wrapped it around the file for added grip.
Great emergency necessity February 12, 2010 T.B. 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this to update my personal survival kits. I was looking for something that would be rugged enough to handle actually being used, but also be able to sit for long periods. I am very happy with this as it soothes my mind as I live in an area prone to flooding.
Excellent value and works great! February 4, 2010 Mikhail in AZ (Vail, AZ, US) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I received this today, and it works great. I would suggest using the back (non-serrated) edge of the steel to shave the magnesium and the serrated edge for striking the flint. The magnesium block and flint both have some kind of coating, so the first time you use it it'll take a few extra tries. I've seen these selling for double or triple the price and people were happy to pay it, so this is an excellent deal!
