Amazon.com Product Description Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air. The First Alert CO400 carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The permanent sensor lasts up to five years. It is powered by two AA replaceable alkaline batteries giving you peace of mind even during power outages. The test/silence button both silences the alarm and allows you to test its functionality. The unit monitors and re-alarms if carbon monoxide levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. No installation is required and the attractive design allows the unit to be placed anywhere you need it. It includes an optional wall mount with no outlet required. An audible and visual low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery. Pull down action chart has convenient guide on what to do if an alarm sounds. 5 year limited warranty. UL listed. --Bree Norlander What's in the Box One carbon monoxide alarm, user's manual, and two AA batteries

Only a 5 year life! July 22, 2010 Terri L Hellesto I have several apartments that I need to provide these alarms for, so I researched them online. No one mentioned that as soon as you install the batteries, it sets a timer going that requires you to throw it away in 60 months! Apparently there is an "end of life signal" that goes off. Imagine what may happen in 60 months with tenants not knowing you can't just replace batteries and the things chirping and making all sorts of noise, and tenants thinking they're malfunctioning or calling the fire department, etc! What a nightmare, not to mention the additional cost and environmental mess if we have to keep throwing these away and buying more every 5 years! I guess it's First Alerts way to have a steady stream of income! Crazy!
seems to work ok May 2, 2010 Mark Sickmiller (cincinnati) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i've had this product for about 6 months and it seems to be fine. it has never sounded, which is a good thing for my health. honestly i guess i don't know if it even works. but it seems to be made of quality material and the battery still works 6 months later.
Simple, inexpensive and does the job April 7, 2010 aksdealer (Boston, MA USA) Ordered the First Alert CO400 on 4/5 via Amazon Prime's free shipping and received 4/6! Super fast shipping...so definitely happy about that. The unit was very easy to setup and I like the fact that I don't have to plug it in. My last First Alert (FCD2BT) was a plug in with a 9V battery back up and I felt like I was always replacing the battery. So this time I thought if I have to keep replacing the battery then might as well not waste electricity by buying a plug in CO alarm. Massachusetts CO alarm regulations need a battery at the minimum so I can't use a plug-in only device. This one uses 2 AAA batteries that come included with the device. So it's been a few hours since I installed and so far so good. Will post updates if I feel there's something wrong...but for now highly recommended.
Compact, easy to install February 5, 2010 BrianJ (Evergreen, CO USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Placed one on each floor, near our bedrooms. They were easy to mount, and seem to work, batts are included. Small price for piece of mind.
Cheaply Made December 30, 2009 S. Quinn (Boston, MA USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The First Alert CO400 model battery powered carbon monoxide alarm is cheaply made. Installed in my apartment a little over a year ago by the seller when I purchased it, the alarm was new, and I haven't had any reason to so much as glance at the device.
However while trying to determine which device was making sounds indicating it needed a new battery, I turned my attention to the First Alert alarm. I pressed in the dual-purpose button in the center on the top to test the product and the alarm began to sound. Immediately, realizing this was not the device in trouble I went to silence the alarm by pressing on the lower half of the same button. I applied hardly any pressure but--and I can only assume this--the plastic arm on the inside of the alarm used to apply pressure to the internal buttons snapped and I was left with a useless alarm.
I'm not sure how First Alert's other products are built, but you get what you pay for.
If looking at First Alert's products, I would not recommend this alarm, I'm sure they sell higher quality products for a little more money.
